The Curtis model 1236 is an AC induction motor controller that is CAN bus capable and can be programmed to fulfill very special roles thanks to its support for the Curtis VCL (Vehicle Control Language). This combination of CAN bus and VCL makes it possible for the drastic reduction of cables used for the connection between the various modules and opens up a whole set of new configuration possibilities that make 1236 so versatile. The algorithms embedded in the microprocessor of this controller were specially developed by Curtis for use in field-oriented motors to achieve the maximum possible efficiency under all conditions. This is also supported by the advanced PWM technologies used in the 1236 that result in low energy consumption, minimal losses, low motor harmonics and low torque ripple. The controller offers smooth low-speed control and regenerative braking down to zero speed, a smart adaptation that optimizes the motor performance based on its key operation limits, ability to keep the motor temperature at a certain limit by adjusting the relevant performance parameters, and continuous real-time monitoring and performance estimates. The housing of the particular controller is sealed as per the IP65 standard and is fully insulated from a thermal perspective.
