Summary

A forklift battery charger is a device used to charge the batteries in a forklift. They come in various shapes and sizes, but all serve the same purpose. Forklift chargers work by circulating a current through the battery, which causes it to recharge.

The benefits of using a forklift charger are numerous:

  1. They can help extend the life of the battery.
  2. They can help improve the performance of the forklift.

  3. They can help ensure that the forklift is always ready to use.

Who should use a forklift charger?

Anyone who owns or operates a forklift should consider using one. They are a valuable tool that can help improve the performance and longevity of the forklift.

How do they work?

Forklift battery chargers work by circulating a current through the battery, which causes it to recharge. This current causes the battery to become more efficient, increasing its lifespan.

Charging and discharging forklift batteries

According to industry standards, several classic lead-acid batteries with capacities of 250 amp hours or less (for example, deep cycle marine) are suggested to be charged at a level of 1C, which is 10 percent of the battery's amp-hour capacity. This information is printed directly on certain batteries.

For example, the charge rate of a 100 amp hour battery is 1C multiplied by 100 is 10 amps. Forklift chargers are typically sized between 14C and 20C, or 14 percent and 20 percent of the battery's amp-hour capacity, depending on the application. Identifying the ah rating of your battery is critical if you are not replacing an existing charger or if you want to make sure that the current charger is the suitable size for your battery.

While it is possible to go a bit bigger in the charger size, it runs the danger of overcharging the battery and diminishing its life. The danger of going too small is that you will undercharge the battery and will not be able to adequately mix the battery chemistry, not to mention that the charger will be working longer and harder than it needs to be.

Compared to conventional lead-acid batteries, forklift battery cells (and UPS backup type 2 volt cells) are larger. The electrolyte may stratify with time, resulting in differing quantities of acid at various levels. Chargers that are excellent and suitably proportioned deal with this problem during the charge cycle and the equalizing phase. Keep in mind that a forklift battery is more expensive than a professional charger, especially the PBM units that we sell.

The majority of forklift batteries are intended to last 1500 cycles or more, with a cycle being defined as having depleted 80 percent of its capacity (20 percent charge left in the battery). An average of one full discharge/charge cycle per day (5 days per week) equates to a little more than 5 years of use.

Forklifts that are not utilized to this extent (and there are plenty of them) and that is properly charged and maintained may have a battery life of 15 years or more. Forklift batteries used in solar systems or other similar applications where the drain depth is not as severe may survive for up to 25 years or more, depending on the application.

While some experts wait until a forklift battery has been depleted to 80 percent before recharging it (which can be reasonable for a lift that is utilized 6 to 8 hours per day), others feel that the deeper the discharge, the greater the number of cycles that can be anticipated. We fall into this group, particularly when we utilize a high-quality microprocessor-controlled charger, such as these PBM units, and charge at 50 percent or less, or at least every week for lifts that are only sometimes used.

Why are forklift chargers important?

Forklift chargers are important because they can help extend the battery's life and improve the forklift's performance. They are an essential tool for anyone who owns or operates a forklift.

What are some key features when buying a forklift battery charger?

When purchasing a forklift charger, it is important to consider the following factors:

  • The type of battery the charger is for

  • The size of the battery

  • The amount of current the charger can provide

  • The voltage provided by the charger

  • The type of connector the charger has

  • The features of the charger

FAQs about Forklift Battery Chargers

How do I know if I need a new forklift charger?

If the performance of your forklift has decreased, or if the battery is not holding a charge for as long as it used to, you may need a new charger.

What happens if I don't use a forklift charger?

If you don't use a forklift charger, the battery will eventually die. This can cause the forklift to stop working and may require the battery to be replaced.

What is the difference between a smart charger and a regular charger?

A smart charger is a charger that can sense when the battery is fully charged and will stop providing power to the battery. A regular charger does not have this ability and can potentially damage the battery if it is left on for too long.

How often should I use a forklift charger?

It is recommended that you use a forklift battery charger every time you charge the battery. This will help ensure that the battery is always in optimal condition.

The future of forklift chargers

Forklift chargers are becoming increasingly more advanced, with new features being added. Soon, we can expect to see even more advanced chargers that offer greater functionality and flexibility.
