Forklift Water Pump

In this article, you will learn about water pumps, working, maintenance practices, signs your pump fails, and in the end, you will learn how to replace a broken forklift water pump?

The water pump is a critical part of the engine and the center of its cooling system driven by the fan belt connected to the crankshaft. This centrifugal pump helps to circulate water around the engine to keep it cool. Maintaining the right operating temperature for the engine helps preserve it through its operating lifespan.

Forklift
Forklift Water Pump

To achieve its primary function of keeping the engine cool, it has two pipes. One pipe runs through the engine block, and the other connects to the radiator. After the coolant gets heated in any of these parts, it is transferred back to the radiator, where it cools off before being sent out again. It is the cyclical process that keeps the engine away from overheating.

How it Works

The forklift engine cooling system comprises the water pump, two water hoses (or pipes), and the radiator, keeping the water cool. The engine's fan belt powers it. The constantly moving fan belt turns the pump's axle, thus creating a suction force that pulls water from the radiator.

The centrifugal force of the pump pulls the water to its exterior walls from where it proceeds to the engine block. Finally, the drained water travels through the engine blocks via the engine’s cylinder heads, where it sucks in available heat before returning to the pump, from where it is sent back to the radiator.

Working
Working of Centrifugal Pump

It is made of cast iron or aluminum. However, impellers may be made from b bronze and synthetic materials to keep them from corrosion.

Maintenance practices

It is best to follow these maintenance practices for a guaranteed long life of your forklift:

  1. Adjust the belt tension as advised by the manufacturer. It is common for water pumps with too much belt tension to malfunction prematurely.

  2. Be quick to replace leaking radiators and worn-out tubes and hoses. They can cause serious complications if left unfixed for very long.

  3. Keep cleaning your cooling system with regularity to prevent cooling systems from clogging up with dirt and pollution. It promises smooth operation of the forklift.

  4. Keep the weep hole always intact and clean. Weep holes are exits for leaking coolants. Faulty weep holes can force the leaking coolants out of seals, possibly contaminating the system components.

  5. Use the coolant advised by the manufacturer. The wrong coolant might not circulate easily through the engine block and gradually cause corrosion. This can have disastrous implications in the long run.

  6. Check the coolant level with regularity. It should be as instructed by the manufacturers.

  7. Always keep a check on the freezing and boiling protection levels of the coolant.

  8. Pressure test the radiator cap. A nicely working radiator cap is vital to maintain the pressure in the cooling system, which raises the boiling point of the coolant. When the cap malfunctions, it allows the coolant to boil out and falsely indicates overheating.

Signs your pump fails

Several signs indicate that your pump fails and needs to be changed. Here are the signs of a damaged pump:

Leakage

A coolant leakage is the most obvious sign of an ailing pump. Over time, the seals and gaskets that keep the coolant contained in the pump may break or wear out. When this happens, you’ll notice the leaking coolant as a puddle on the engine.

Whining noise

While the engine is running, you might hear a high-pitched sound like a whistling kettle. This whining noise is usually a sign that there is a problem with the belt or belt bearing.

Overheating engine

It also fails at its primary job of circulating the coolant across the engine block. This would cause the engine to overheat, with the temperature gauge indicating a hot engine and steam coming out. The engine continues to run despite the warning; it could cause extra damage to the engine.

Foul smell

It may also emit a "rotten egg smell" (sulfurous odor). When this happens, it is usually an indication that the engine isn't suctioning properly, causing the coolant to burn off steam.

After determining that your pump is having issues, replace it immediately. If you do not do this, it will cause some serious damage to the engine.

How to replace a broken forklift water pump?

Drain the radiator

First, make sure your engine has cooled off to avoid burns. It would help if you had a bucket under the radiator to collect coolant. Now, open the valve at the bottom of the radiator to release coolant.

Remove the fan belt

Before removing the belt, you should take a picture; it will help you reinstall it correctly. You can remove the belt by loosening the tension on the automatic tensioner.

Unbolt pump

Use a screw to unbolt the pump from the engine.

Clean the mounting surface of the pump

Before installing the new pump, it is necessary to remove all traces of the old GASKET on the mounting surface of the pump.

Position the new GASKET

To install a new pump, you need a new GASKET. Position the GASKET on the new pump and use an adhesive material to fix the GASKET, then bolt it on the engine.

Refill the cooling system with a new coolant

Before refilling the cooling system, unfasten the vent valve on the cooling system to allow air to escape. Most cooling systems have vent valves but pour the coolant slowly if your system has no vent valve. It will help in venting out the air present in the cooling system.

Takeaways

  • The water pump is a critical part of the engine and the center of its cooling system.

  • The forklift engine cooling system comprises the water pump, two water hoses (or pipes), and the radiator.

  • Leakage, whining noise, overheating engine and foul smell are the signs that indicate your pump fails and needs to be changed.

  • Above are the steps mentioned to replace a broken forklift water pump.
