What is a steering gearbox?
A gearbox is a case or box that holds the steering gear of the forklift. The steering wheel's rotary motion is converted into the steering linkage's reciprocating motion. The primary aim of the steering gearbox is to turn the stub axle on either side as per requirement.

Working on the steering gearbox
As the wheel is turned, the steering gearbox transmits the driver's steering inputs to the steering linkage, multiplying it and causing the front wheels to change direction more quickly than the steering wheel. The steering wheel of a car is powered by a pinion gear which turns a rack that moves the front wheels. Some steering systems use recirculating ball systems that use ball bearings mounted on the worm-like steering gear.

Common problem
Gearboxes can develop leaks or cracks, even though steering gears last the life of a forklift. In addition to increased steering effort and excessive play and looseness of the steering, signs that the steering gearbox needs to be repaired or replaced are increased or jerky steering. A malfunction of a steering component can cause the vehicle to be uncontrollable, so it should be checked immediately by an expert.
Orbital steering control valve
Hydrostatic steering is controlled by this rotary slide valve. A proportional amount of oil is dispensed to the right or left by the steering unit when the steering wheel is turned.
The orbital steering control valves have a function of built-in return-to-centre. The tires will automatically return to the center when the driver releases the wheel. It allows the driver to drive at higher speeds or crawl over rocks slowly. Depending on what ram you combine with your orbital, you will need to make more turns to get from lock to lock.
Forklift lever control valve
Lever-operated valves are simpler to operate and control. It is also called the quarter-turn valve. The 90-degree turn will open or close the valve properly.
A lever-operated valve provides partial opening and closing as well as partial closing. When the turning action stops, the valve is locked in place. If you need precision measurements, this feature is quite helpful. The problem with levers is that they take up more space than valves, and they can often break due to their inability to withstand pressure like gears. Further, levers can require enormous force to operate, especially on large valves.
