Summary

Clark Material Handling Company manufactures and supplies the best quality forklifts and associated replacement parts, including Belts. The Clark Forklift Belt drive is designed to deliver power from the main engine crankshaft via a V-belt to the transmission and thereby drives the forklift outrigger cylinder rods. We've compiled information about different Belt Drives and an overview for replacement or purchasing guide in this blog post. If your belt is worn out, be sure to contact Lift Parts Warehouse today!

About Clark

Clark Material Handling Company is the world's largest truck-mounted material handling equipment manufacturer. Clark designs, engineers, manufactures, and markets a broad range of forklift trucks, order pickers, pallet trucks, knuckle-boom loaders, and other custom-designed material handling equipment on a global basis. Clark has manufacturing facilities in Greenville, Ohio; Rockmart, Georgia; Oak Creek, Wisconsin; and Lincoln, Rhode Island. Clark has sales and service locations in North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa; the Middle East; and Asia-Pacific regions. The company is a division of Hyster-Yale Group (NYSE: HY).

Clark Forklift Drive Belts

Clark Forklifts are powered by electric motors and hydraulic cylinders, which move the forks back and forth via belts that run along with pulleys to the left and right of the forklift truck.

The Clarke Forklift drive belts are used to power the Forklift's wheel or wheel motors, which then rotate Forklift Electric Motors. The electric Forklift motor is either a 24-volt direct current motor or a low voltage alternating Forklift motor forklift.

What are Forklift Drive Belts?

Drive belts are a way to transfer power from a prime mover, such as an electric motor or internal combustion engine, to another device. The belt allows for smooth and reliable power transmission.

It transfers energy from a power source (i.e., the engine) which turns the rollers in contact with the inclined surfaces of the drive sprocket's teeth, which in turn pull the belt tight and transfer torque from the power source to a driven component - usually an axle, pulley or sprocket.

The purpose of this belt is to take the rotational energy from a power source and push it along its length to a second component located at some distance away, much like how a drive shaft would, except in this instance, a series of gears transfer the rotational energy.

Forklift Drive Belts are most commonly made of rubber or polyester cords, with textile cords rarely used due to their susceptibility to separation when put under strain. They come in all shapes and sizes (depending on what they are driving) and can result in high levels of noise being emitted from the drive system if not maintained well.

Types of Forklift Belt Drive

As discussed above, a forklift drive belt transmits power from the engine or motor to the lifting shaft/forks. The stretch and wear-resistance properties of such type of belt allow it to be dynamic, precise, and cost-effective. Forklift belts can also withstand high amounts of tension needed for moving heavy loads.

Different forklift drive belts have various applications depending on their purpose and design properties.

In general, the five most common types of drive belts are:

  1. Flat Belts

  2. V Belts

  3. Wavy Belts

  4. Cogged Belts

  5. Ribbed Belts

Flat Belts

Flat belts are the most common type of belt for general applications. Known for its high tensile strength and durability, the Flat Belt is used extensively in conveyor systems, material handling solutions, and manufacturing applications.

These belts use flat rubber or fabric to transmit power between shafts or pulleys without slipping. They are generally used for mechanical devices that require moderate speeds and precision timing of power transmission between components. Flat belts’ stretch and wear-resistance properties make them more dynamic than other belt types but still prone to slipping under tension. They are also cost-effective and easy to find.

V Belts

V-belts, also referred to as Vee belts or wedge belts, are among the most common forklift drive belts. What makes them unique is that they are designed with symmetrical, wedge-shaped cross-sections. They're a good choice for forklift trucks due to their durability and high contact area.

The shape of a V-belt allows it to grip the pulleys that it runs over. The angle of the belt combined with the pulley's grooves act as wedges to help the belt grip.

Because of their wedge shape, V-belts are naturally self-tensioning. They can be stretched out when run over a loose pulley but will grip the pulley tightly once weight is applied. The belt can lift or drive an object without being tightened or loosened.

These belts can transmit high amounts of power over long distances, making them a standard solution to powering forklift trucks.

The shape and material of V-belts also allow for excellent ventilation. Many v-belt materials are treated with heat resistance to protect against harsh conditions. The open spaces will enable the belt to stay calm, which is particularly important if used in extreme environments.

Wavy Belts

Wavy belts are similar to V-ribbed belts in that they use wavy ridges or ribs on the inside of the belt instead of flat fabric or rubber. However, their ribs are not as prominent as those on V-belts. This results in a less dynamic belt that is more precise during use but more susceptible to slipping under tension and stretching between pulleys.

Cogged or Timing Belts

Cogged belts are the most dynamic of all drive belts due to their cogs or sprockets throughout the belt surface. These drive belts are used within industrial machinery that needs connections to be made and broken repeatedly over long periods. The sprockets on cogged drive belts allow for quick release of power when needed without any interruption in operation. However, they are the least precise of all belt types due to their various stretch properties and tendency to slip under tension. Cogged belts are also the most expensive type of belt due to their design. Since most cog belts are made of polyurethane or natural rubber, they do not slip and create a lot of friction to keep tension in larger applications.

Ribbed Belts

Ribbed belts are belts with multiple V-grooves running along the length of the belt. These ribbed grooves create extra grip, preventing slipping and extending belt life.

These belts are typically used in the automotive, HVAC, and farming equipment industries. Ribbed belts are widespread because it creates a good seal around two or more connected pulleys, reducing the amount of heat produced. This heat reduction is beneficial for the engine and can help reduce failures.

Ribbed belts are typically made out of EPDM material, an abbreviation for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Mixture. What exactly does that mean? Well, I'm glad you asked! Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Mixture is a rubber-like material that is heat-resistant and can stretch up to 150% of its original length.

Belt Replacement

Forklift belt drives are an integral component in the machinery of a forklift. The power transferred between the crankshaft and the wheels through this part allows vehicles to lift, move, and manipulate cargo.

Many factors determine when to replace a belt drive.

  • Belt Friction and Wear: One of the most important is how much wear has occurred due to friction against the pulleys. The more a forklift's drive belt is worn, the faster it heats up and potentially fails. Belts that are adequately maintained and show minor wear against the pulley may last several years. If there is excessive wear, or if the belt has separated, this means that the belt drive has failed and must be replaced.

  • Belt Vibration: Another reason to change a drive belt is vibration. When a belt is worn, it does not absorb vibration as efficiently. That means that the smoothness of the drive is compromised, and the forklift will be more challenging to handle.

  • Belt Tension: Belt tension is another factor in how long a belt drive will last. The belt tension should be adjusted so that the top of the belt has about 1/4" – 3/8" sag in the center. If the tension is too high, it will cause premature wear and noisy operation. If it is too loose, belts slip and can fall off, causing loss of power to wheels or damage to other components. An adequately maintained belt with tension that is 30% of the max tensile strength on the belt label should last for years.

  • Belt Dressing: Belt dressings help protect the belt from dirt and grime, leading to a shortening of the belt's life.

  • Compatibility: For users looking to replace their belt drives, they should consult the compatibility list on Lift Parts Warehouse and find a suitable replacement. The compatibility list describes any alterations that need to be made for the proper fit and function of the part. For example: "Replace with 200048 or 201012" means compatible belt drives can be replaced with either 200048 or 201012. This compatibility list can help users select the correct replacement part for their belt drive based on the machine’s size, shape, and intended use.
