The Nissan K21 is an inline-four piston engine. It was introduced in 2001 by Nissan Bluebird Sylphy ( A32 ). As the Nissan K engine, the K21 Engine is a modern, aluminum alloy engine with computerized fuel injection and Nissan's direct ignition system. This engine uses two chain-driven camshafts to operate its 24 valves; it also has Nissan's VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) lift and timing mechanism for both intake and exhaust valves which continuously changes the valve duration and lift height according to engine load, resulting in better performance and reduced emissions over its predecessor Nissan M engines, but without sacrificing smoothness or refinement.
Nissan K21 Engine
The K21 engine utilizes a die-cast aluminum lower block with thin-wall casting to achieve its compact size, achieving Nissan's goal of low emissions; Nissan claims this engine has thermal emissions up to 40 percent lower than the Nissan M engine. This Nissan engine is also one of Nissan's first engines to use an all-aluminum construction cylinder head (most Nissan engines still used cast-iron heads until late 2005). This Nissan forklift engine uses nitride-treated rocker arms and camshafts to increase strength and reduce wear.
The SU type (Surface-Up type) piston skirts used on previous Nissan engines like Nissan M12A Engine were also adopted for the Nissan K21 to improve oil control at high speeds where the pistons are moving faster than the crankshaft speed. This reduces the risk of oil cavitation, improving engine durability. This Nissan engine also borrows the Nissan M engine's short-skirt piston design to reduce overall engine height for a lower center of gravity and better weight balance.
This Nissan engine is equipped with Nissan Variable Induction Control (NIVC) system that Nissan has been using on their high-end engines since Nissan VQ30DET.
K21 engine produces 147 hp at 6000 rpm and 136 lb·ft at 4000 rpm from its relatively small displacement size of 1997 cc. The K21 engine replaced the Nissan M12A Engine as Nissan's base engine in the 2001 Nissan Bluebird Sylphy ( A32 ).
In some markets where tax codes restrict body sizes more than engine displacement, K21 Engine is also available in Nissan Bluebird Sylphy's twin, Nissan Tiida Sedan (C11). In Nissan Skyline, the Nissan K engine has been used from Nissan Cima Y34 to Nissan R35 GT-R without any significant changes.
Engine Codes: Nissan K engine has an engine code of "K20P".
Bore Size : 94mm [3.7in]
Stroke : 82mm [3.2in]
Displacement: 1,997cc [1.9L]
Compression Ratio: 9:1 (JDM), 10:1 (Taiwan)
Nissan Spark Plugs
Nissan Spark Plugs manufactured by Nippondenso are the OEM spark plugs for the Nissan K engine. Nissan recommends the replacement of spark plugs every 60k miles (100k km). However, we recommend checking and replacing the spark plugs before that; it will help prevent misfires and other problems down the road. The best time to replace your spark plugs is when you get your oil changed every so often anyway, but we recommend changing them yourself if you know how to since Nissan K-series engines are so straightforward to work on.
Nissan recommends replacing the spark plugs every other oil change cycle (30k miles if you do it yourself)
Nissan Fuel Filter
Nissan's fuel filter is integrated into the fuel pump assembly, so when it's time for a replacement, be sure that you get an exact replacement or an OEM compatible one at your local parts store.
Nissan Oil Filter
Nissan engine oil filters manufactured by Nippondenso come in cartridge type and spin-on type. Nissan recommends replacing the engine oil filter every 10,000 miles (16,000 km). We recommend checking and changing the oil filter once a year or at every other oil change cycle (30k miles if you do it yourself).
Nissan K21 replaces Nissan M12A Engine
Nissan M12A engine replaced by 1.9l K21 engine in 2001 - Max power at 6000 rpm and 136 lb·ft at 4000 rpm from its relatively small displacement size of 1997 cc - In some markets where tax codes restrict body sizes more than engine displacement, 1.9l K21 engine is also available in twin, 2010-present Nissan Tiida Sedan (C11).
