The Nissan Z24 engine was a Nissan VQ-type engine that replaced the Nissan SR20DET as Nissan's entry-level performance engine. In North America, Nissan phased out the Nissan 240SX and used Nissan Altima front-wheel-drive platforms from 1994 to 1998, powered by the Nissan Z24 20-valve DOHC non-turbo or 60d turbocharged I4 engines or a 2.4l turbocharged Nissan VG30E V6 engine.
The 2.4L VG30E V6/Z24/240SX predecessor was initially introduced in 1989 as a non-turbo version for luxury markets only, but both versions have been available since 1990 with slight variations between them. In Japan, this platform was known as Nissan Bluebird.
Nissan Z24 Engine
The Nissan Z24 can be found mainly in Japan and Morocco, where Nissan manufactures it under license from Yanmar Co., Ltd. for use primarily in minivans that carry the Nissan branding. This gasoline engine was introduced to replace Nissan's copyright infringing agreement with General Motors, Isuzu for their 4BD1 2.0l I4 turbo-diesel Nissan Atlas commercial truck and Nissan Civilian minivan Nissan Caravan in Japan.
Nissan started phasing out Nissan Z24 with Nissan VQ engines in 2010 after Nissan moved to Nissan VK45DE 4.5l petrol engine, which replaced Nissan's former popular VK45DE 4.5l petrol engine from 2002 to 2009, Nissan Xterra SUV from 2001 to 2010, and Nissan Frontier truck from 2005-2010 models in North America and Europe later on that year for the 2011 model year.
The Japanese Domestic Market changes their emissions standards every 10 years, and 2000 was a milestone. The last year Nissan used this configuration was 1995 when they phased out the old ES technology computer-controlled carburetor Nissan Z24 engines with Nissan VQ engines in Nissan Primera P12 sedan/Nissan Sunny B14 wagon where Nissan changed the Nissan 4-cylinder Nissan SR20DE engine with Nissan SR20DET engine.
History of Nissan Z24 Engine
Nissan phased out the Nissan 240SX and Nissan Z24 in 1998 to make room for the Nissan 350Z and Nissan Sentra SE-R/SE-Spec V, which used a new SR20VE engine that replaced the Nissan SR20DET later on. The Nissan 350Z and Nissan Sentra SE-R/SE-Spec V were also available with an optional 65d turbocharged I4, but this was offered before 1998 under Japan's Nismo performance brand.
The Nissan Z24 name was first used as a trim level of Australia's Nissan Pulsar line from 1990 to 1993 and New Zealand's Nissan Sunny line from 1990 to 1994. As those countries switched to Nissan Pulsar from Nissan Sunny, Nissan Z24 also became a trim level of Europe's Nissan Sunny line from 1993 to 1997. Nissan then switched to Nissan Primera for those countries in 1998.
The Nissan Forklift Z24 engine was not available in North America as a Nissan 240SX/Nissan Sentra SE-R/SE-Spec V replacement until the 2000 model year when it was introduced as a non-turbo I4 version with the SR20VE engine under Nissan's luxury performance brand, Infiniti G35 sedan, and Nissan Altima coupe. In 2003, Nissan phased out the non-turbo Nissan SR20VE with a turbocharged version called the Nissan VQ35HR engine. Nissan also phased out the Nissan Infiniti G35 sedan and Nissan Altima coupe after the 2006 model year to make way for Nissan 350Z/Altima coupe/Infiniti G35 coupe and Nissan Maxima used a VQ35DE engine until the 2011 model year when it was replaced with Nissan VK45DE engine.
The Nissan Z24 is still available today under Nissan's luxury performance brand, Infiniti G37 sedan and Nissan 370Z sports car, which uses three different versions of Nissan VQ-type engines: VQ30DETT (turbo DOHC I6), VQ37VHR (turbo DOHC6), and the new super called VQ25DE which replaced both the former SR20DET and original VQ20DE Nissan Sentra/Nissan 200SX (US)/Nissan Cube(Japan) non-turbo I4 engines in 2010. Nissan also uses a Nissan VQ35-type engine for the Nissan 370Z sports car, which is a supercharged version of the Nissan VK45DE 4.5l petrol engine that replaced Nissan's former popular VK45DE 4.5l petrol engine from 2002 to 2009, Nissan Xterra SUV from 2001 to 2010, and Nissan Frontier truck from 2005-2010.
The current Nissan Z24 variant today is manufactured in Japan by Yanmar under Nissan license as an option package upgrade for specific vehicles such as Honda Odyssey minivan and Honda Pilot SUV vehicles or European models such as BMW 5 series E60 sedan. Nissan does not use Nissan Z24 or Nissan VQ engines in North America or Europe, but Nissan Primera vehicles are still used in Mexico. Nissan's luxury performance brand, Infiniti, has also phased out their Nissan Z(240)24 variant engine with Nissan G37 6-cylinder VK45DE type engines, which replaced Nissan 350Z/Nissan 370Z sports car lineups beginning with the 2011 model year.
