Summary

The P40 series Nissans shared many components with other Nissan vehicles; however, each vehicle still retained something unique. For instance, while it used the front suspension components of both its predecessor models, it used different rear suspension components which were specifically designed for this vehicle. It was also one of the first Nissan vehicles with a number of advanced electronic instruments, including an early LCD computer that displayed various information about the car's performance and system voltage.

The Nissan P402

Nissan was introduced in Japan on May 21, 1983. The design is credited to Shiro Nakamura, who was also involved in designing other Nissan models during his career, including the R31/R32 Nissan Skyline. The model designation "P402" referred to it being a 4-door sedan version with 2WD (Front-wheel-drive).

Nissan was offered the same 2-liter gasoline engine that powered its predecessor model (the ). Still, this new vehicle had been modified to increase both power output and torque. The car's original power output was at 5,600 rpm (and of torque at 4,400 rpm). It weighed.

Standard equipment included power steering and one air conditioning unit. A sports version of the vehicle called the 'Nissan P402' was also available; it included amenities such as a different front grille, fog lights, rear spoiler, and wheels.

Characteristics of Nissan P40 Engine

The Nissan P40 Engine included the following:

  • A new turbo-diesel version called the, which had an engine capable of producing. Later in 1985, its power output was increased to. One example of this vehicle has been modified with the SR20DET engine and was used for automotive magazine testing purposes. This model, known as 'Turbo Z,' is currently exhibited at the Nissan Pavilion (at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show).

  • The 'Nissan P402' (2WD) and ('4WD') were also available with two different types of engines, one of which was Nissan's newly developed 1.8 liter V6. This engine contained Nissan's variable induction control technology, which Nissan labeled "TCCS" (Twin Cam Control System). Nissan claimed it offered excellent low to mid-range torque, which meant better performance for both vehicles at their time of release.

Nissan P40 Engine to fit in different models

Nissan was released simultaneously with its sedan counterpart called the Nissan Maxima / Nissan Altima. Still, it retained a distinct image from its predecessor model (the Nissan Laurel C31). It has been praised for having an exceptionally refined ride quality compared to other vehicles within its class available during this era. For instance, it has been said that even on roads, passengers could not feel any roughness.

Nissan was also considered very advanced in technological equipment. For instance, some of the technology that this vehicle incorporated into its design included power windows, front disc brakes, a self-diagnostic system (a type of computerized monitoring system), an air conditioning unit (including an early LCD mounted on the dashboard, which displayed various information about the car's performance), power steering and electronically controlled engine control units which prevented over speeding of the vehicle. The Nissan P402 had a 3-speed automatic transmission with electronic overdrive, while the Nissan P410 had a 4-speed automatic transmission.

This vehicle was also used as the basis for Nissan's first-generation Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle (SUV), which also saw production in 1984. It later became Nissan's flagship off-roader until it was replaced by Nissan Safari's 3rd Generation Nissan Patrol Y61/Nissan Terrano II/Nissan Armada T31 model.

The engine which was fitted in this model had the following characteristics:

  • The diesel version was called the, which had a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder SOHC Turbocharged intercooled standard rail Diesel with multi-point injection, known as "DIG-T. '' It also came with Mitsubishi's MIVEC variable valve timing system. It was available only at the beginning of production. Later examples were equipped with a more powerful version of this engine called the SR18DI (SR20DE for later models).

  • The petrol version was called the SR18D (SR20D for later models) and has either a single point or multi-point fuel-injected versions of Nissan's "PSS" (Programmed Sequential System) injection system, which is Nissan's type of throttle body injection system. Still, it uses solenoid-operated injectors instead of conventional throttle body designs. It does have a Nissan GEMS variable ignition timing control system known as "G-Tec." Nissan refers to this technology as being an advanced form of electronic intelligence.

The New Zealand market also produced a special version of the 4WD model. These were fitted with a 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine ("SR20ET") and manual transmission only (4 speed). A limited number were built before it was decided not to proceed with production. The initial body kit was very similar to the Japanese spec model, but later examples had a different front bumper and grille assembly.
