The P40 series Nissans shared many components with other Nissan vehicles; however, each vehicle still retained something unique. For instance, while it used the front suspension components of both its predecessor models, it used different rear suspension components which were specifically designed for this vehicle. This vehicle was also used as the basis for Nissan's first-generation Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle (SUV), which also saw production in 1984. It later became Nissan's flagship off-roader until it was replaced by Nissan Safari's 3rd Generation Nissan Patrol Y61/Nissan Terrano II/Nissan Armada T31 model.
