The function of a flywheel

The flywheel plays a very important role in I.C Engine vehicles such as diesel and propane forklifts. Almost all I.C engines used in Forklifts are four-stroke engines, where only one stroke produces power. As a result, the output of the engine, i.e. the rotation of the crankshaft is not constant. If this pulsating rotation is transferred to the wheels, driving any vehicle will be very difficult. This is where a flywheel comes into play.

A flywheel is a circular disc with a solid mass attached to one end of the crankshaft. The mass evens out the fluctuation in rotational speed of the crankshaft and makes driving smooth. The flywheel also houses the ring gear around its periphery, which is required for starting the engine by the starter motor.
