What is a Wheel Cylinder

A wheel cylinder is a hydraulic cylinder and a part of your forklift’s drum brake assembly. In most cases, each wheel has a pair of these cylinders. They receive the hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder and use it to stop the forklift.

When you floor the brake pedal, the pushrod pushes the piston inside the master brake cylinder. This pressurizes the brake oil inside the cylinder. The pressure then transmits to the wheel cylinder via hydraulic lines. As the pressure reaches the wheel cylinder, it pushes the pistons in both directions. The pistons then exert force on the brake shoes which stops the wheels.
