The Nissan Forklift H20 engine is a water-cooled inline 6-cylinder engine. This Nissan Forklift Engine was designed in the mid-1970s to be an advanced V6 that would provide comparable power and torque to popular V8 engines of its day.
History of Nissan H20 Engine
The Nissan H20 engine was Nissan's first multivalve engine, but it wasn't Nissan's first attempt at a multivalve engine. Nissan had previously created a 60° V4, which was used in their early X1/X2 Fairlady Z cars in the early '70s. This engine proved to have unforgivable reliability problems, so Nissan abandoned it quickly after its introduction.
While this start might lead one to believe that Nissan may not make reliable multivalve engines, Nissan was able to use this experience from their previous engine and develop this Nissan forklift engine.
Characteristics of Nissan H20
The Nissan H20 contains a cast-iron block with an aluminum alloy head equipped with two separate cam-phases per cylinder, which allows for intake and exhaust side valve timing to provide more power at low RPMs. Nissan designed the Nissan engine as a replacement for the L series inline 6-cylinder engine found in 240Z's and other Nissan cars of the time. After its release in 1978, it quickly became Nissan's go-to engine choice until about 1986, when Nissan released its VH range of engines.
This Nissan engine has been used in several different Nissan models over its lifetime. The first Nissan to use the H20 engine was the Nissan March/Micra K10. Nissan's first coupe car, the Nissan Leopard, also used a slightly modified Nissan engine. Even today, Nissan still uses this engine in specific markets for its low-cost Nissan Pulsar N15 model.
In 1990 Nissan phased out production of their L series inline-six-cylinder engines and moved on to using more modern V6s such as the VH series, as stated earlier. In some countries, Nissan continued to produce their new K11 Micra with an updated Nissan engine producing 80hp, which is still available today in some last-generation Nissan Micras sold in Eastern European countries and Latin America.
